In a landmark moment for heritage conservation in New South Wales, the Victoria Theatre has been awarded one of the largest single grants ever issued by the NSW Government—$1 million through the Activating State Heritage program.
This milestone funding recognises the deep cultural and historical significance of the Victoria Theatre—NSW’s oldest surviving theatre—and will allow The Next Century Trust and our project team to deliver transformative capital improvements and interpretive experiences. These works will celebrate the theatre’s 134-year legacy, open long-inaccessible spaces, and help anchor a thriving cultural and heritage precinct in the heart of Newcastle.
What will the $1M Activating State Heritage Grant help us achieve?
This funding is more than a revitalisation. It’s an activation: of culture, creativity, and community spirit in Newcastle’s East End and will support three integrated components:
Immersive heritage storytelling
Drawing on remarkable historical research, discoveries, and creative reconstructions, the Trust will deliver immersive heritage displays using audio-visual storytelling and programmable LED lighting. These installations will be woven into the fabric of the building—offering rich perspectives on geology, Indigenous history, vaudeville glory days, and everything in between.
Opening the dress circle
After decades of silence, the theatre’s grand dress circle will be reopened to the public. These works build on momentum from the Creative Capital Fund and ongoing support from our community of donors and partners which together will provide new DDA-compliant ramps, a lift, stairs and restored seating. The completed dress circle will make this magnificent space safe, accessible and sustainable for future generations of audiences and artists..
Lighting up the façade
The final piece is a breathtaking “Hero” lighting presentation to illuminate the Victoria’s original 1891 façade. Using colour-changing LEDs to highlight architectural details, the theatre will glow once again—becoming a beacon of heritage and optimism on Perkins Street.
Why it matters
This activation doesn’t just preserve bricks and mortar—it reawakens a sleeping beauty in the heart of Newcastle. It’s a vital boost for Newcastle’s creative economy and a celebration of the city’s evolving cultural identity. As part of a growing and thriving East End precinct, the Victoria Theatre will support jobs, boost local tourism, and offer a renewed venue for performance, education, and community connection.
From hosting royalty and international dignitaries, to welcoming stars of vaudeville, opera, and the silver screen, the Victoria Theatre has long been a stage for the extraordinary, putting Newcastle on the national touring map. Through each era, the theatre has remained a beacon for big ideas, bold expression, and a main character of Newcastle’s cultural story.
Thank you to the NSW Government, our expert collaborators, and our incredible community for making this moment possible.
The Victoria’s revival is further inspired by Century Venues’ recent award-winning renovation of the historic Enmore Theatre, Newtown. Works included over 2.5km of programmable LED lighting—bringing the art deco ceiling and façade to life. More than just illumination, the lighting system adds atmosphere, storytelling, and drama—reviving this heritage icon with a modern spark.
